The Basis of Writing

Writing is a form of thoughts, expressions, or detailed statements that express meaning. This can be derived and produced in any recommended manner. Beginning the semester, english 21007 has taught me various ways to effectively address my thoughts,while helping to strengthen my syntax and diction skills. Initially, professor McDonald began by speaking of the importance of developing a purpose and considering an audience when writing. She reiterated that an audience is essential in understanding how involved a conversation can be, in terms of terminology and explanations. For example, speaking to another civil engineer in my field may be expressed in specific terminology and brings forth challenging thoughts. However, when speaking to someone unaware of engineering concepts, conversation may be pronounced in layman’s terms. 

In previous english classes, I had always known the significance of examining mood, tone, formal vs. informal, and professionalism in speech. Stressing this concern is very helpful in portraying specific terminology one wishes to speak about and the ability to express certain phrases for apprehension. However, in every writing assignment, the purpose is crucial. One must review the following: what is the need for imposing this information? Why might this information be useful? Prof McDonald’s discussion posts, challenged our meanings to why these factors are crucial. This basis of thinking opened my eyes to imagining and creating layouts of what one wishes to say, before saying it. Especially in the writing process and editing, we must consider how this information can be defined when others read it.

In our first major class discussion, my classmates and I were faced with a challenge of evaluating situations where we would explain a task or situation to someone. Initially when asked, one may start to express their thoughts without hesitation. However with this being said, it is first important to assess certain parameters in expressing effective thoughts to display a message. Classmates and I collectively agreed this consists of: prior knowledge known, formatting in chronological orders, proper diction, medium, and this use of establishing an audience. Now withgoing any individual writing assignment, I evaluate the meanings of all these concepts as a whole.
